Contemporary Design
One thing that can be said about the nature of structure through the ages is that it changes and moves with new understanding and new technology. Only over the recent past has there developed a preoccupation with "local context" and matching with what has gone before. In pursuit of this goal all other aims seem to have become subservient and we are at risk of losing our place in history and the significance of our own time.
We believe that good design acknowledges the past but also looks to the future. We look to blend the best of current technologies and materials to give the most suitable balance of form and use.
Sustainability
The Earth is over four billion years old and could last for a further eight billion years or more. Mankind has been around for less than a hundred thousand years and has been influencing the nature of the environment, with structure, for a lot less time.
Recent rapid increase in our use of finite resources, particularly over the last few hundred years, has seen a fundamental change in the way we view our position in the world and how we treat it.
The need to get a balance between the way we live and our use of the limited resources we have is affecting the way we think about all aspects of our lives. Our use of buildings to fulfil our needs and aspirations must be tempered with respect for those who will follow us to ensure they have the same opportunities we have had. We're all custodians of the world for a brief period of time and need to make sure we pass it on in good health.
From the perspective of structure this means considering carefully the use of materials, how they are sourced, how they are used and eventually how they can be reused. Allowing for natural replacement and recycling of building materials is the key to making a small carbon footprint.
